Saying goodbye…to our tomato plants.

My first blog will be a simple one, and as I type this, I am in mourning for the bounty of tomatoes we had this year…literally hundreds of glorious, juicy, and deliciously sweet tomatoes. I’ve eaten caprese salad at least three times per week for the past month-and-a-half, and as soon as I’m done with this post, I’m heading to the kitchen for more. I have run out of not one, but two bottles of balsamic vinegar- my absolute favorite is the apple balsamic vinegar from Flag Hill Farm here in Vermont. YUM!

Saying goodbye to my plants is hard. I’ve spent all summer talking to them, cherishing every beautiful fruit that I’ve collected from their limbs and appreciating that they never argue or make messes for me to clean up. Even harder is the notion that with the dying-off of these plants is the ushering in of a new season…Fall. I love this season as much as the next person, but the arrival of Fall, for me, also signifies what lies ahead: months and months of bitter cold, snow blanketing the earth, dogs that look like snow burying themselves in snow for hours on end while looking at me as though I’m ruining their lives by asking them to come inside, and, of course, my well honed obsession with not slipping or falling on ice. Fall, I love. Winter? I only love it if I’m cozied up by a window, next to a fire and my people, with a book or a knitting project and a hot cuppa something in hand.

I’m not ready to say goodbye to tomatoes, but in any case, welcome to our blog. I hope someday soon I’ll post worthwhile reading here. Until then, you’ll find me in the kitchen eating the last of my beauties in a Caprese salad.
